ABOUT THE DAFFODIL

The daffodil has been connected to loss in a number of ways.

It has been used in connection to:

• the loss of children in the holocaust

• Shadowloss

• Unreturned love

In Roman mythology, Dis (god of the underworld) snatched Prosperina (goddess of the 4 seasons) who was gathering flowers in Sicily. Dis took Prosperina to the underworld to be his bride. All the flowers she was gathering…she dropped. They became daffodils. The daffodil can be a meaningful symbol for anyone navigating a shadowless and discovering some of the good that stemmed from the bad. This is never to discount the impact of the Shadowloss, but to accept that our losses result in a rich tapestry of experience as we continue to choose how we move forward in life. Our losses (whether a Shadowloss or a Big Death) are not things we chose for ourselves. The daffodil acknowledges that we didn’t choose what happened to us, but we are choosing to walk forward, still.
