What do the terms “Death Doula” “Death Midwife” “End of Life Guide” and related terms mean? Are some more prevalent among certain groups or geographic regions? Do these terms create confusion for some and increase confidence in others? Who coined these terms?

What is the purpose of this survey and the workgroup?

Our team intends to collect survey responses from a large pool. From those responses, our workgroup will release an open access paper sharing our findings.

Survey respondents will be emailed with results when they are available.

  • Cole (she/her/they) is a thanatologist and workgroup lead.

  • Alex (she/her) is in graduate school for social work, and is part of the Thanatology Track at the School of American Thanatology.

  • Madison (she/her) is a mortality companion and writer. Madison is part of the Thanatology Track at the School of American Thanatology.

  • Danielle (she/her) is a social worker and plant mom. Danielle is part of the Thanabotany track at the School of American Thanatology.

  • Desiree Celeste (they/them) is a Denver based Death & Grief Companion, centering their work on Trans individuals. They are a Death Companioning alum and part of the Deathwork track at the School of American Thanatology.

  • Kiera (she/he/they) is an elder in training, holding space for life and death transitions with intuition, energetic support, and care. Kiera is part of both the Deathwork and Thanabotany tracks at the School of American Thanatology.

  • Brenda (she/her/ella) is a pre-medical student interested in becoming a Palliative and Hospice care Doctor, and as a recent victim of a homicide, she brings awareness to homicide grief. Brenda is part of the Thanatology Track at the School of American Thanatology.
